All about Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette did not just sell an impressive amount of records in the 1990s. With her stratospheric 1995 album, Jagged Little Pill, the Canadian singer-songwriter discovered an uncanny alchemy that, beyond all exaggeration, defined an era and captured the mood of a generation with astonishing accuracy.

Born in Ottawa, Morissette started making music at a young age, participating in the Canadian children's programme You Can't Do That On Television in the 1980s and releasing her first single when she was only 10 years old. Two albums followed in 1991 and 1992, both of which were well received in his homeland but struggled to make their way abroad.

Things changed in 1994 when Morissette moved to Los Angeles and met producer and lyricist Glen Ballard. The two formed a solid partnership, leading Morissette to break away from the pop of her first two albums and embrace a sound that combined the angst, grit and confessionalism of alt-rock with irresistible pop choruses. Thanks to the single You Oughta Know, Morissette was already a star when Jagged Little Pill made its debut in 1995.

A string of hit singles (One Hand In My Pocket, Ironic, All I Really Want and You Learn) catapulted Jagged Little Pill to multi-platinum sales and a 69-week stay in the US top ten. Many tried to imitate her, but none could come close to her success.

Morissette returned in 1998 with Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. Although it could in no way match the status and hype of its predecessor, it still set records and represented a step forward in terms of craftsmanship and production. The following year, Morissette had a cameo as God, alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, in Kevin Smith's film Dogma.

After separating from Ballard, Morissette released Under Rug Swept, her first post-stardom album, written entirely by herself in 2002. This was followed in 2004 by So-Called Chaos, an album notorious for abandoning her famously acidic view on relationships and replacing it with a more romantic work inspired by her engagement to actor Ryan Reynolds. However, the relationship did not last, and its epilogue inspired her 2008 album, Flavours Of Entanglement.

After 2012‘s Havoc And Bright Lights, which reflected a more serene attitude due to her recent marriage and motherhood, Morissette took a long hiatus, not releasing another album until 2020’s Such Pretty Forks In The Road.

In 2019, Morissette announced a UK tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Jagged Little Pill, but the dates had to be rescheduled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The tour was then confirmed for November 2021, with new dates added in Leeds and London.

2022 saw the release of The Storm Before the Calm, Morissette's tenth studio album, which Clash magazine called ‘proof that Alanis Morissette offers more than catchy melodies, clever lyrics and reminds us how “life has a funny way of helping you when you think everything is going wrong”’.

In a 2023 interview with Variety, the artist stated that she would start work on a new album in 2024.
