About

Born in Los Angeles, raised in Bakersfield, Gregory Porter is the American soul singer who has conquered the world with his albums. To prove it, among many other things, are the two Grammy Awards he won first with the album Liquid Spirit in 2014 - which established him as one of the most important jazz artists of his generation with over a million records sold - and then with Take Me To The Alley in 2016. His albums Water, Nat King Cole & Me and All Rise, as well as the singles Real Good Hands and Hey Laura, also received Grammy Award nominations. His debut came in 2010 with the album Water, which earned him his first Grammy nomination for 'Best Jazz Vocal', which was exceptional for a debut album. This first single already contained that timeless sense of maturity characteristic of the blues, gospel and soul giants that have influenced Porter's career. Then in 2012, with his second album Be Good, for the single Real Good Hands he won a second Grammy nomination, this time for 'Best Traditional R&B Performance'. With a voice that can be caressing or assertive, warm or encouraging, Gregory Porter is described as "a fantastic young singer" by Wynton Marsalis, with whom he often performs in New York. Many awards and accolades have been received by Gregory Porter: 'Best of 2012' in America and the UK, 'Jazz Album of the Year' on iTunes, up to number one on the Amazon chart, 'Top 10 Albums of 2012' on Soul Train, 'Best UK Performance' for the Jazz FM Awards. Among Porter's benchmarks are Nat King Cole, Joe Williams and Donny Hathaway. Porter's vocal style has certainly been shaped by the example of such singers, but his personal world view charges all songs with such emotional intensity that each performance is extremely powerful. To one of the artists who most inspired and influenced him he dedicated the heartfelt tribute album Nat King Cole & Me in 2017 and in 2020 he returned to original songwriting with the uplifting All Rise, both of which were nominated for Grammy Awards. In 2021, Still Rising was released, collecting new songs, covers, duets and a selection of his best-loved hits. In 2023, Porter released his first Christmas album Christmas Wish. Porter also hosted the podcast The Hang, a series of conversations with his famous friends, and his cooking show The PorterHouse, in which the singer shared recipes inspired by his local community, experiences from touring around the world and family cooking traditions.
