Alan Sparhawk, the frontman of Low, makes his debut in Italy as a solo artist with his first LP, White Roses, My God, released in September 2024 via Sub Pop.
Alan Sparhawk has always been a prolific and versatile musician, an uneasy soul always ready to explore new territories of sound and emotion. Even if his name is inextricably linked to the thirty years as frontman of the legendary band Low, just take a look at the many parallel projects he has carried out in the same period to see how much he loves to experiment: from punk to funk, from music production to improvisation.
Even Low never settled for a single style or approach. The band was a true collaboration, an ongoing dialogue, a love story between Sparhawk and his wife Mimi Parker, co-founder, drummer, voice and irreplaceable soul of the group. Following the path of Low, from the first intimate and subdued works, through the powerful melodies of their central period, to the creative and lush chaos of the last albums, is like witnessing a constant process of transformation of hearts, minds and spirits.
In 2022, Mimi Parker disappeared after a long battle with cancer, and there is no doubt that White Roses, My God is a pain-born album. You can hear it in the title, but especially in songs like Heaven, where Sparhawk describes the afterlife as "a lonely place if you’re alone." This sense of loss also emerges from Sparhawk’s choice to do everything himself: every note, every word, every programmed rhythm. But to reduce the album only to mourning would be limiting, even unfair. This intense, brilliant, provocative and overwhelming album goes further: it is an extraordinary work of experimentation, with deep lyrics and catchy rhythms that never cease to amaze.
